pure madness

I know that there are people that think I am crazy and over the top. I have my kids on a schedule and their bedtime routine takes precedence over all things. Ever. My kids are in bed and quiet by 7 PM every night - with very few exceptions.

Over spring break last week, I let some of it slide. We went to visit my grandparents for the day and didn't even get home until after our usual bedtime. One evening Tom and I went and toured a house and my mom put them to bed a little later than usual (I'd said it was okay). But as the week went on, and Lily became more and more tired...things began to snowball out of control. The girl was getting less and less sleep and was harder to be around as a result.

There is one more thing I should come clean about before I go on...my doctor was going to try me on a new ADHD medication. Turns out it was going to be over $400 a month. So, while I dealt with getting a new alternative, I was med free. Yikes. I had no idea how much the medicine was helping my daily life, my mothering abilities and my quality of life in general...but wowee! Let's not go med free again. Seriously. Finally, on Friday, I got a prescription of my old medicine to hold me over until we could get the new one figured out.

By Thursday of last week, Lily and I were both fit to be tied. Lily refused to swim at her swimming lesson. What?! I know! I can't tell if that is going to be a one time thing, or if we have a problem regarding her new tubes, but shocking nonetheless.  By the time the weekend came I'll admit that I farmed the girl out to grandparents. She spent the afternoon with Grandma on Saturday and nearly the whole day with my dad on Sunday. [THANK YOU!]

Things were not better for anyone on Monday morning. Tuesday morning was so bad that I emailed Lily's teacher ahead of taking her to school just to warn her it might be crazy. Turns out Lily was doing fine at school. That fact says to me that she's tired and saving all of her lovely self for school and letting down her guard at home. I'm so glad that she's mature enough to do such a thing...but whew! I was tired too!

There is a happy ending to this post. Last night Lily finally hit a wall. She ate her dinner (4 helpings and a salad) and then she was half asleep waiting for her bedtime story. I'm so happy to say that she and I read two stories and she was asleep before I could make it out of her room afterwards. She woke up in a lovely mood this morning, picked out a lovely outfit and was just a pure joy. Lucky enough for us, Tom was late going to work and I got to take her to school without the other kids. This allowed me a couple of extra minutes to walk her up to the school. No kicking and screaming involved. Hallelujah!
Lily's outfit for school today. Her shirt says: Creative Chicks Rule!

Things are not always easy around here. And sometimes I would like to Fed Ex myself to another planet. But, strangely, I wouldn't have it any other way. Life is good and going way too fast. I am going to forget last week and focus on today. And it will be a long time before I get lax on the bedtime routine again.
